History of Bassendean
The Town of Bassendean, located in the northeastern suburbs of Perth, Western Australia, lies approximately 6 kilometers (4 miles) west of Midland’s industrial hub and about 12 kilometers (7 miles) northeast of Perth’s central business district. Covering an area of 10.4 square kilometers (4.0 sq mi), the town maintains 97 kilometers of roads and had an approximate population of 15,000 as of the 2016 Census. Bassendean is a member of the Eastern Metropolitan Regional Council.
Historically, the area was known as the West Guildford Road District when it was established on May 10, 1901. It underwent several name changes, becoming the Bassendean Road District on July 7, 1922. Then, with the enactment of the Local Government Act 1960, it was reformed into the Shire of Bassendean on July 1, 1961. Finally, it gained town status and adopted its current name on July 1, 1975.
