History of Belmont

The City of Belmont, situated in the inner eastern suburbs of Perth, Western Australia, lies approximately 8 kilometers (5 miles) east of the city’s central business district, along the south bank of the Swan River. Covering an area of 39.8 square kilometers (15.4 sq mi), the city maintains 225 kilometers of roads and had a population of almost 40,000 as of the 2016 Census.

Belmont is notable for hosting Perth’s domestic and international airports, which occupy a significant portion, about 33.7%, of the City of Belmont’s land area.

Historically, the Belmont Road District was established on December 2, 1898, and later renamed Belmont Park on October 4, 1907. During the period from 1906 to 1909, Burswood Island was part of the district.

On July 1, 1961, the Belmont Park Road District was reformed into the Shire of Belmont following the enactment of the Local Government Act 1960. It achieved city status on February 17, 1979.

Suburbs within the City of Belmont, such as Ascot and Belmont, have a longstanding association with horse racing, given their proximity to race tracks like Ascot Racecourse and Belmont Park. Until 1956, the Belmont Spur Railway connected Bayswater on the Perth to Midland line to the Ascot race track.
