History of Cambridge
The Town of Cambridge, nestled in the inner western suburbs of Perth, Western Australia, sits approximately 5 kilometers west of the central business district, stretching to the Indian Ocean at City Beach. Encompassing an area of 22.0 square kilometers, it boasted a population of nearly 29,000 as of the 2021 Census. Originally part of the City of Perth, the town underwent restructuring by the Western Australian State Government in 1994.
Historically, the area formed part of the North Perth municipality, established in 1901. However, due to sustainability challenges, it merged into the City of Perth in 1915. In 1993, the Government of Western Australia initiated the division of the City of Perth’s local government area, leading to the creation of three additional LGAs: the Town of Vincent, the Town of Cambridge, and the Town of Victoria Park, alongside a scaled-down City of Perth.
In a significant legal development in October 2020, the Town successfully secured an injunction against state government attempts to suspend the Council, citing concerns over interference in Town administration. This landmark event marked the first instance where a local government in Western Australia effectively challenged ministerial authority to suspend a Council.
