History of Canning
The City of Canning, located in the southeastern suburbs of Perth, Western Australia, lies approximately 10 kilometers (6 miles) southeast of the city’s central business district. Covering an area of 64.8 square kilometers (25.0 sq mi), the city had a population of approximately 90,000 as of the 2016 Census.
The history of the area dates back to a short-lived attempt to establish a town trust for the Canning District from 1843 to 1847, which was dissolved. Development continued under the control of a Central Board of Works until the establishment of the Canning Road District in 1871.
Originally, the City of Canning originated as the Municipality of Queen’s Park, established on July 1, 1907, when the original Canning Road District was divided into two. It was later renamed the Queen’s Park Road District and subsequently became the second Canning Road District in 1921. The district gained town status as the Town of Canning on December 4, 1970, and attained city status on March 10, 1979.
In 1974, the Town of Canning acquired the heritage-registered Woodles Homestead to establish a local heritage museum.
In 2012, an inquiry against the Canning City Council led to the suspension of the council and the appointment of Linton Reynolds as City Commissioner. In 2014, the State Government sacked the remaining councillors and appointed a panel of three new Commissioners. There were plans to merge the City of Canning with neighboring local areas, including the City of Gosnells and City of Melville, but these plans were not realized.
