History of Fremantle
The City of Fremantle, located in the south of Perth, Western Australia, is a local government area covering 19.0 square kilometers (7.3 square miles). It is situated approximately 19 kilometers (12 miles) southwest of Perth’s central business district.
Named after Charles Fremantle, who in 1829 claimed for George IV “all that part of New Holland (Australia) which is not included within the territory of New South Wales,” the City of Fremantle has a rich history . A town trust was established in 1848, consisting of a chairman and a committee of five members. Over the next 23 years, they focused on building roads and numerous public buildings using convict labor. By 1870, Fremantle had a population of 3,796 and was a moderately thriving town. This growth led the colonists to seek greater control over their local affairs.
On 21 February 1871, the Municipality of Fremantle was formed, with a new council that included a chairman and nine councillors . Two significant achievements of this council were ensuring a reliable supply of clean water and improving the sanitation system. By 1928, Fremantle’s population had grown to 22,340, with an annual revenue of £73,354, justifying its claim for city status. Fremantle was granted city status on 3 June 1929, coinciding with the Centenary of Western Australia celebrations .
Originally part of Fremantle, North Fremantle became an independent municipality in October 1895, with Daniel Keen Congdon serving as its first mayor . However, the two municipalities were reunited by an order of the Governor in Executive Council on 1 November 1961 .
