History of Gosnells

The City of Gosnells is a local government area located in the southeastern suburbs of Perth, Western Australia’s capital city. Situated about 20 kilometers (12 miles) southeast of Perth’s central business district and northwest of Armadale, the City spans 128 square kilometers (49.42 square miles). Part of this area includes state forest that extends into the Darling Scarp to the east. As of the 2016 Census, Gosnells had a population of approximately 118,000. The largest commercial hub in the City is the Central Maddington shopping center, with additional district centers in the Gosnells town center and Thornlie.

The name “Gosnells” dates back to 1862 when Charles Gosnell, the owner of London cosmetic company John Gosnell & Co., purchased Canning location 16 from the Davis family, the original grantees in 1829. Although Gosnell’s purchase was a personal investment, when the land was sold to developers in 1903, they leveraged the association with the well-known cosmetic company. They claimed the land was bought for its fertile soil to grow flowers for perfume production, a myth bolstered by the presence of the Arum Lily (Zantedeschia aethiopica) and effective marketing. This led to the establishment of the Gosnells railway station on the Armadale line in 1903.

The Gosnells Road District was formed from the abolished Canning Road District on 1 July 1907. Brickworks were introduced in Beckenham in the early 1990s. Between 1912 and 1915, a fruit fly infestation devastated nearly all stone fruit crops, prompting many farmers to switch to dairying and market gardening, with irrigation crucial due to the sandy, infertile soils of Canning Vale. In 1923, Gosnells acquired land from the abolished Jandakot Road District. Significant development did not occur until after World War II, with the population increasing from 7,400 in 1954 to about 11,000 in 1966, and then to 21,000 in 1970.

On 1 July 1961, the Gosnells Road District became the Shire of Gosnells under the Local Government Act 1960. It attained town status as the Town of Gosnells on 1 July 1973, and achieved City status on 1 July 1977, adopting its current name.

In the 1970s, a large industrial estate was established in Maddington, which expanded in the following decades. Commercial and industrial development also grew in a linear fashion along Albany Highway between Beckenham and Gosnells.
