History of Kalamunda

The City of Kalamunda, situated approximately 25 kilometers east of Perth’s central business district, is a local government area within the eastern metropolitan region of Western Australia. Encompassing 324 square kilometers, much of its territory comprises state forest, extending into the elevated Darling Scarp to the east. With a population of 58,762 as of 2021, the city boasts a blend of natural beauty and urban living.

Established as the Darling Range Road District on April 30, 1897, it transitioned into the Shire of Kalamunda on July 1, 1961, following the implementation of the Local Government Act 1960. This legislation restructured all existing road districts into shires. The journey toward city status commenced with community consultations in 2015, culminating in the renaming of the shire as the City of Kalamunda on July 1, 2017.

Administratively, the city is organized into four wards:

  • North Ward (represented by three councillors)
  • North West Ward (represented by three councillors)
  • South East Ward (represented by three councillors)
  • South West Ward (represented by three councillors)
