History of Kwinana

The City of Kwinana, located approximately 38 kilometers south of the Perth central business district via the Kwinana Freeway, is a significant local government area within Western Australia’s metropolitan region. Covering an expanse of around 118 square kilometers, it encompasses both urban and natural landscapes, boasting 287 kilometers of roads. At the time of the 2016 Census, Kwinana was home to nearly 39,000 residents.

The origins of the name “Kwinana” trace back to the Kimberley Aboriginal language, where it translates to either “young woman” or “pretty maiden.” The naming of the area was inspired by the wreck of the SS Kwinana on Cockburn Sound in 1922, which was subsequently blown onto Kwinana Beach. This event led to the adoption of the name for a township in 1937. Additionally, several suburbs within Kwinana derive their names from the sailing ships that initially brought immigrants to Western Australia, such as Medina, Calista, and Parmelia.

The establishment of the Kwinana Road District occurred on February 15, 1954, following the passage of the Kwinana Road District Act 1953. This legislation outlined the district’s governance structure, appointing a Commissioner with expertise in local government matters. Subsequent developments saw the division of Kwinana into five wards in preparation for the first election held on February 11, 1961. As a result of legislative changes, the district transitioned into the Shire of Kwinana on July 1, 1961, under the Local Government Act 1960.

Further evolution ensued with the district’s elevation to the Town of Kwinana on May 28, 1977. Finally, on September 17, 2012, it was proclaimed a city, assuming its current designation as the City of Kwinana.
