History of Vincent
The City of Vincent stands as a local government area in Western Australia, encompassing approximately 10.4 square kilometers in metropolitan Perth, the state capital. Nestled about 3 kilometers from the Perth CBD, it boasts a network of 139 kilometers of roads and 104 hectares of lush parks and gardens. At the 2016 Census, the City of Vincent was home to over 33,000 residents.
Its namesake, Vincent Street, lends its name to the city. The street, believed to have been named by George Vincent, the chief draftsman in the Lands Department, traces back to around 1876. George Vincent, who received land on the north side of the street, east of Charles Street, in the initial Crown grant of Perth, is thought to have named it after himself.
The area’s development gained momentum in May 1895 when the Leederville Roads Board was gazetted, encompassing Leederville and West Leederville. Progress continued, and by April 1897, the Leederville Roads Board transitioned into a municipality, marking a significant milestone as its population surpassed one thousand.
In 1914, the amalgamation of the municipalities of North Perth, Leederville, and Perth, later joined by Victoria Park in 1917, fueled the greater Perth movement.
On 1 July 1994, the restructuring of the City of Perth by the Government of Western Australia heralded the birth of three new local governments: the Town of Vincent, the Town of Cambridge, and the Town of Shepperton (now the Town of Victoria Park), alongside a downsized City of Perth. The Town of Vincent attained city status on 1 July 2011.
In 2014, a proposal to reform the municipal landscape by abolishing the City and redistributing its territory between the City of Perth and the City of Stirling emerged. However, negotiations faltered, and subsequent efforts to amalgamate Vincent with Perth proved fruitless. Consequently, the boundaries of the City of Vincent remained intact, marking a chapter of preservation and stability for the community.
