History of Wanneroo
The City of Wanneroo, a local government area with city status, resides in the northern suburbs of Perth, Western Australia, approximately 25 kilometers north of the central business district. Positioned as part of the northern boundary of the Perth metropolitan area, Wanneroo spans the federal divisions of Cowan, Moore, and Pearce.
Its principal commercial and residential hubs thrive in Wanneroo to the east and Clarkson to the north. With the region witnessing rapid expansion and development, future urban centers are slated for Alkimos, Yanchep, and Two Rocks. Wanneroo also boasts the Yanchep and Neerabup National Parks, along with the Neerabup Industrial Estate in the north.
Before 1902, Wanneroo was nestled within the Perth Road District, which later evolved into the City of Stirling. The establishment of the Wanneroo Road District on 31 October 1902, under the Roads Act 1888, marked its inception. Named after the Wanneroo wetlands explored and recorded by John Butler in 1834, the board laid the foundation for the area’s governance.
With the enactment of the Local Government Act 1960, all road boards transitioned into shires, and thus, the Shire of Wanneroo emerged on 1 July 1961. Initially encompassing territories north of Beach Road and west of Alexander Drive, it ascended to City status on 31 October 1985, in recognition of the burgeoning development surrounding Joondalup.
However, on 1 July 1998, following a recommendation by the Local Government Advisory Committee, the City of Wanneroo underwent a split. The southwestern section, featuring the urban center of Joondalup, became the independent City of Joondalup. Meanwhile, the remaining area, including inland suburbs east of Lake Joondalup and coastal suburbs north of Burns Beach, constituted the revised Shire of Wanneroo. This entity swiftly regained City status on 1 July 1999, although it did not have a Shire President until after the subsequent local government elections.
