History of Melville

The City of Melville, situated in the southern suburbs of Perth, Western Australia, lies east of Fremantle and approximately 12 kilometers south of Perth’s central business district. Covering an area of 52.73 square kilometers, it boasted a population of around 98,000 as recorded in the 2016 Census.

Established on December 14, 1900, initially as the East Fremantle Road District under the Roads Boards Act 1871, it was later renamed the Melville Road District on June 14, 1901. Significant expansion occurred on July 20, 1923, when it absorbed a substantial portion of land from the abolished Jandakot Road District.

Transitioning into the Shire of Melville on July 1, 1961, under the Local Government Act 1960, it attained town status as the Town of Melville on September 28, 1962. Finally, on May 3, 1968, it was granted city status, adopting its present name, the City of Melville.

With 463 kilometers of roads and 2.10 square kilometers of parks and gardens under its jurisdiction, the City of Melville is committed to maintaining its infrastructure and enhancing its green spaces for the benefit of its residents.
