History of Nedlands
The City of Nedlands, situated in the inner western suburbs of Perth, Western Australia, lies approximately 7 kilometers west of the central business district. Within the metropolitan area’s western suburbs, colloquially referred to as the “golden triangle” for their affluence and high property values, Nedlands stands as a prominent locale.
Its origins trace back to the Claremont Road District, established on March 30, 1893, in response to a petition from ratepayers residing in the burgeoning areas of Nedlands and Claremont. Initially, seven men were appointed to the new Board, marking the inception of local government authority in the Nedlands/Claremont region. Claremont later separated in 1898 to form its own municipal government, which persists today as the Town of Claremont.
The entity evolved into the Nedlands Road District on August 12, 1932, attaining municipal status as the Municipality of Nedlands on February 17, 1956. Subsequently, it acquired city status on July 1, 1959, adopting its current name. The city comprised four wards—Melvista, Hollywood, Dalkeith, and Coastal—maintaining these divisions to the present day.
In 2016, despite an unsuccessful attempt to amalgamate metropolitan local governments, the state government expanded the boundaries of the City of Perth to include a portion of Nedlands, encompassing the University of Western Australia and surrounding residential areas.
Following the change of government in the 2017 state election, the City of Nedlands faced mounting political pressure to accommodate infill development and higher residential densities. Failure to cooperate in updating the city’s aging planning scheme led to the imposition of a new scheme by the Minister of Planning. Subsequent development applications sparked considerable community unrest and opposition, prompting the resignations of key executive staff, including the CEO, director of planning, and the mayor.
