History of Serpentine - Jarrahdale
The Shire of Serpentine-Jarrahdale is a local government area located in the outer southeastern metropolitan region of Perth, the capital city of Western Australia. Covering an area of 905 square kilometers (349 square miles), it had a population of 32,173 according to the 2021 Census. Although named after the towns of Serpentine and Jarrahdale, neither serves as the largest settlement or the administrative center of the Shire. Byford is the largest settlement, while the seat of government is in Mundijong.
The Serpentine-Jarrahdale Road District was formed on 8 August 1913 through the merger of the Serpentine Road District (established in 1894) and the Jarrahdale Road District (established in 1902). On 1 July 1961, it transitioned to a Shire following the implementation of the Local Government Act 1960, which converted all remaining road districts into shires. On 17 June 1977, the Shire expanded to include Byford, previously part of the Shire of Armadale-Kelmscott.
In the wake of the 2021 local government election for the Shire of Serpentine-Jarrahdale, Rob Coales, a councillor representing the North Ward, initiated calls for an investigation into alleged election fraud. The motion to investigate was passed unanimously.
