History of Stirling
The City of Stirling, located in the northern suburbs of Perth, Western Australia, approximately 10 kilometers north of the central business district, covers a sprawling area of 105.2 square kilometers. With a population exceeding 223,000 residents, it holds the distinction of being the largest local government area by population in Western Australia.
Established on January 24, 1871, as the Perth Road District under the District Roads Act 1871, Stirling initially encompassed what are now the Cities of Wanneroo, Joondalup, Bayswater, and Belmont. With the implementation of the Local Government Act 1960, which transformed road districts into shires, it transitioned into the Shire of Perth on July 1, 1961. The population at that time stood at 84,000. Recognized as a city and renamed Stirling on January 24, 1971.
In May 2021, a motion was passed by electors advocating for the renaming of the City of Stirling due to its association with James Stirling, the first governor of Western Australia, who was involved in the Pinjarra Massacre on October 28, 1834. The motion sparked national attention and prompted discussions regarding a potential name change. However, at a subsequent council meeting in June 2021, no motions regarding changing the name were carried, with concerns raised about the associated costs and the precedent it might set. The meeting drew significant public interest, and calls were made for a broader review of place names linked to colonial figures with known racist histories across Western Australia.
