The City of Swan traces its origins back to February 20, 1970, when it was established as the Shire of Swan through the amalgamation of the Shire of Swan-Guildford and the Town of Midland. It later attained city status on April 25, 2000, adopting its current name.
In a boundary adjustment on July 1, 2016, a portion of Noranda north of Widgee Road was transferred to the City of Bayswater.
